Ivory Innovations Student Associate Diligence Trips

In March, Ivory Innovations student associates crossed the country to support our staff in conducting due diligence on a handful of 2024 Ivory Prize finalists. The Ivory Prize is Ivory Innovations’ annual award that recognizes the most ambitious, feasible, and scalable solutions to housing affordability. These diligence trips allow the Ivory Innovations team and Ivory Prize judges to fully evaluate the 2024 Top 25 organizations for eligibility to advance to the later stages of the Ivory Prize: Top 10 and Winners.

Students travel to Capsule in California

Student associates Katelyn and Dylan visited Capsule. Capsule’s factory, based in Anaheim, California, is home to their innovative productized components manufacturing, helping to make housing construction more affordable through reduced labor costs and optimized timelines. Katelyn said that “It was incredible to actually see one of the most exciting construction innovations we had been researching all year in person. Capsule truly sets itself apart through its excellent team, mission, and passion behind the innovations.”

 
 

Students visit Canvas in California

Student associates Sydney and Keni visited Canvas, a company in San Francisco, California that is revolutionizing construction with its worker-controlled robotic machine for drywall finishing. During their visit, Sydney and Keni were impressed by Canvas's commitment to empowering skilled workers with better tools. Canvas's innovative technology enables contractors to achieve superior metrics in schedule, cost, quality, and safety, while addressing the industry's challenge of a shrinking pool of skilled labor. Sydney and Keni were inspired by Canvas's dedication to enhancing efficiency and quality in construction projects through technology-driven solutions.

Students tour Onx and see Apis Cor in Florida

Onx

Student associates Jeremiah and Jake attended the opening of Onx factory in Pompidou Beach, Florida. Onx automates and streamlines concrete and steel modular offsite construction, making it affordable and profitable. They produce all components for homes in less than a week, with move-in times as short as 30 days. These homes are not only aesthetically pleasing but also hurricane and tornado resistant, offering increased strength, energy efficiency, and affordability in insurance. Jeremiah said he was “especially captivated by the COO Ravi Baht’s extensive industry expertise and his passion for the solution Onx has created.”

Apis Cor

Jeremiah and Jake also visited 3D homebuilding company Apis Cor in Melbourne, Florida. They were impressed by the unique portability and quick setup time of Apis Cor's robots, serving as a demonstratable commitment to reducing transportation and setup costs associated with traditional construction methods. By offering a smaller and more agile 3D printer, Apis Cor provides flexibility and efficiency to construction projects, paving the way for faster and more cost-effective homebuilding solutions.
