CONNECTICUT: Desegregate CT
Desegregate CT
Hartford, CT
Desegregate CT is a coalition of neighbors and nonprofits advocating for better local & state land use policies to make every community in Connecticut more prosperous, equitable, and sustainable.
Formed in June 2020, in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd and the renewed conversation on racial justice, their work is about first imagining and then enacting a new vision for local and state land use policies that promote economic growth, racial inclusivity, and environmental sustainability. We leverage original research and grassroots organizing in service of public education and policy change at all levels of government.
Desegregate CT educates and mobilizes community members about transit-oriented communities and how to become a land use advocate. They have collected research on solutions for housing supply, cases from other states, historical Connecticut zoning practices and the federal origins of segregated policies in the US. Although jump-started by the events of 2020, Desegregate CT is doing work that is long overdue in Connecticut and across the country. We could all learn from their research and continuing efforts to address issues with housing that go beyond current supply and demand concerns and aim to address housing access and generational wealth gaps zoning laws have enforced for far too long.
